Indian Mangoes are also know as “King Of Fruits”. Because of it’s sweet taste, richness and colour. It is the most important fruit and the country ranks first in mango exports and is largest producer in the world contributing 40.48% of the total world production. Today, we are going to talk about the most famous mangoes and mango packaging.

How Many Varieties Of Indian Mangoes Are There?

There are around 1,500 types of mangoes found in India. Out of which near about 1,000 varieties are grown commercially.

Alphonso / Hapus

Season – May to June

This is the most expensive variety of Indian mangoes and is exported in plenty. Alphonso is also known as “King Of Mangoes” because of sweetness.

Konkan region in Maharashtra State is famous for Hapus. This is ovate oblique and medium in size. Orange-yellow in colour. The pulp is yellow-orange in colour.

Banganpalli

Season – April to June

Banganpalli is one of the earliest varieties of mangoes you can get in the market.

These mangoes are large and obliquely oval in shape. Weighing on an average 350 to 400 grams. The colour of fruit is Golden yellow. It is one of the most common cultivars of mango in South India. Hence, it is also called as the “King Of Mangoes” in South India.

Chausa

Season – July to August

Chausa hit the market when you think the mango season is coming to an end. These are one of the sweetest mangoes grown in North India.

Sweet pulp and light yellow skin, chausa is large, ovate to oval oblique in shape.

Dashehri

Season – June to July

One of the very famous variety of Indian mango. This one is best enjoyed by tearing off the tip and sucking out all sweet pulp and juice.

Dashehri is medium in size. Shape is oblong-oblique. The skin colour is yellow. It is mid season variety.

Langra

Season – July to August

These are the prominent variety of mango. Langra is medium in size. Ovate in shape and lettuce green in colour.

Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh is famous for Banarasi Langra.

Totapuri

Season – July to August

The tip of these mangoes are look like Parrot’s (Tota in Hindi) beak that’s how they get the name. Totapuri hails from South India. This is not sweet like the other mangoes but good for salads.

It is medium to large in size. Shape is oblong with necked base.

Kesar

Season – June to July

Kesar mangoes are known for the fragrance and saffron coloured sweet pulp.

Grown in Western India. It is medium in size.

Packaging Of Mango For Export 

For export packaging each individual mango will be enclosed in a clean, white, soft, expandable and netted type polystyrene sleeve to prevent bruising before packing in a box.

The mangoes are packed in insect proof boxes. If ventilated boxes are used, they will be covered with insect proof screen. Also, all side of box should be sealed with adhesive tape to prevent any entry of pests.

The printing would be done with non-toxic ink. Then mangoes shall be packed in each container in compliance with the Recommended International Code of Practice for Packaging and Transport of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (CAC/RCP 44-1995, Amd. 1-2004).
